Logo Design

Before getting into After Effects, the first thing that has to be done is develop the brand. Since the prepaid cellphones are going to be marketed for children, the logo would have to reflect it. Toys and animals were some of the first objects to come to mind. The toy idea was scrapped early as it would make the phone out to be a toy, so the idea of using animals was used. The idea to use an animal that hopped was quickly established, and the name hop was born. Next came the task of choosing the animal to represent “Hop Mobile” I explored many common animals that could before settling on the monkey.

Picking the Logo

With the monkey logo chosen, the next step was to finalize how it was to look. At first the monkey was going to be full body, but when compared to actual cellphone companies like: AT&T, BlackBerry, and Sprint, the brand didn’t stand out and looked very out of place. The design then switched to just a head and a tail. The font used was DAYS by Aleksanr Kalachev, Alexey Maslov, and Jovanny Lemonad. Before going into color first start in black and white, so the design can be worked and values established, without having to worry about the colors.

Choosing the Colors

Multiple color treatments are created and the best looking of the bunch then go into another round of color where more variations are created before the final look is achieved. In this case number 6 of the first set was chosen and even after playing with different variations of that one, it was the best option. Lastly came adjusting the spacing between the image and text.

Designing the Phones

With the logo completed the next step, was to create the concept art for the phones to use as reference. Since two different types of cellphones are going to be used, it required to sets of concept. Each phone comes with an emergency call button will alert police and parents should the child need help. For the child phone the look would be rounded and look more like a standard cellphone while the older tween phone, will be more like a smartphone. Children would literally be able to grow up with Hop Mobile as their primary phone service.

The phones were modeled, and textured in in 3ds Max. This is where the phones were animated as well. The text would be added in After Effects. The colors for the phones were chosen as an ode to the brands color design. The Icons were created in Photoshop.
